The Marvel List You Need in your Life Right Now

I don’t know about you, but I’m dying in anticipation as I wait for Avengers: Engame. I’ve been doing some things to pass the time until the movie premieres:

  • I entered a contest to get paid to sit through a marathon of all 22 Marvel movies this week (I didn’t win--which is good because I have 4 kids, a husband, and a couple of full-time jobs).

  • I’ve watched the three previous Avengers movies this week to brush up on my game (like that was even necessary)

  • I’ve shunned all social media because of the fear of spoilers (may the culprits step on a Lego everyday for eternity).

And still I wait.

I'm getting bored, y'all.

Even with all of these extra-curricular Marvel activities, I find myself wringing my hands with anticipation. Surely my Marvel-loving friends are equally angsty! I take my role as your timeline’s biggest Marvel fan seriously, so I’ve decided to kill two birds with one stone and help you while helping myself as we countdown the minutes before everyone’s favorite movie event! Join me as I recall my favorite Marvel hits and misses, and please feel free to reply with your own!

Favorite Marvel Movie (MCU)

Truth be told, some true Marvel gems lie just outside of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Deadpool 1 and 2, as well as Spiderman Into the Spiderverse are three of the top five Marvel products for sure. But if I am forced to remain within the universe, I still can still pick my top three:

  1. Thor: Ragnorok - This is the first one where I actually like Thor. He stops taking himself so seriously, with great results. Funny, action-packed, and a definite must-see for the timeline!

2. Avengers Infinity War - This was hard to choose, but I finally landed on this one for #2 because it brings ALL of the story-lines together in such a dramatic and satisfying way.

3. Black Panther - This movie was beautiful to see and to hear. Just a real solid combination of all the things that make a movie-watching experience great.

Favorite Marvel Character

Again, since Miles Morales and Deadpool are off the table, I’m going to have to go with the character that pulls the most at my heartstrings--the Hulk. He’s the most relatable to my personal experience. He just wants to live a life of reading and nerd stuff, quietly off the grid, but keeps getting pulled into other people’s drama--and when he goes off, he erupts and can’t control it. He’s always guilty after, and... I try to keep it bottled up, but it seriously takes the boys 17 minutes just to get in the car in the morning, and they’re fighting, and...oh wait...back to the Hulk. Yeah, he’s my pick.

Favorite Marvel Movie Moment

While rewatching the first Avengers movie last week, there was the moment when they are fighting the aliens in the streets of New York and they are working together for the first time. Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Cap, Hulk and Hawkeye, all kicking butts and taking names. I remember the moment being cool the first time, but now after all we’ve been through together, I almost teared up at seeing the moment that a group of misfit heroes became the Avengers.

And now for the misses…

Even though I seriously LOVE all things Avengers, even I can admit when some balls were dropped. Little tiny, unimportant balls, but still…

Biggest Missed Opportunity

After Thor Ragnorok, everyone had a conspiracy theory of where the Soul Stone would be, and many incorrectly guessed it would make its appearance in Black Panther. I just KNEW the location, however, after reading that the soul stone had the ability to manipulate or control every other soul in the universe. I thought, where have I seen an orange stone that gives the power and control of others before?

Hint--in the giant circle above. Spoiler alert--I was wrong! Instead, we had to waste all this precious movie real estate setting up this elaborate and out-of-the-blue sacrifice scheme that I have a sinking feeling will be reversed in the next movie anyway. Ah well, moving on.

Top 3 Cringe-worthy Moments (in reverse order)

3. Wanda calling Vision, “Viz.” (shudders) Maybe it’s just me, but no.

2. Toby Maguire as Spiderman. I know this was before the MCU...but no.

And the number 1 most cringeworthy Marvel moment…(drumroll please)...

Sorry, I had to do it! So now, let that cringy image burn your retinas as you wait for sweet redemption in Avengers: Endgame.

I've already got my ticket for Sunday afternoon. When will you see Endgame?
